Incoming Players/Swimmers
On behalf of the Westlake Aquatics Boosters and Coaches, we would like to welcome you and your son or daughter to the Aquatics Program. We'd like to share some information with you that will better prepare your student athlete for the Water Polo & Swim seasons.
Our website, aquatics.westlakewarriors.com , is our main source of communication. Please check it daily, especially the TEAM NEWS link, for whichever sport is in season. In addition, we are always available to answer questions you may have. Simply click on the 'contact us' link found on the home page of the website.
Our summer Water Polo program begins Monday, 6/18/07 and concludes
Friday, 7/29/07. Fees are due by 5/31/07. Applications and information
are available on our summer link.
Speedo swimsuits are required for boys and one piece suits for girls are mandatory.
All water polo players must join USA Water Polo to be eligible for our off-season (including summer) club water polo programs. We suggest you join for three years so you don't have to rejoin each year. Applications can be downloaded and mailed, or you can apply online at www.usawaterpolo.com. The club name is "Lightning Aquatics" and the club number is #520.
Boys' Water Polo season begins in August when school starts, but there will be "Hell Week" two a day mandatory practices the week prior to the start of school. This year's hell week practices will begin on Monday, August 20th and continue up to the first day of school. All this information will be made available to the athletes by the end of summer season and will also be posted on our website. Information regarding the ordering of the team suits will be made available at this time as well.
Girls' Water Polo season begins in November, but your daughter should be enrolled in seventh period P.E. - Water Polo from the first day of school. Only incoming freshman girls who participated in our summer water polo program will be eligible to enroll in the fall off-season water polo PE class. The girls will practice in the pool, daily, during seventh period until the season begins. (Once again, one piece swim suits are mandatory). Tryouts for girls will be announced on the website and on the school PA system.
Specific afternoon practice times for the girl's season will be posted on the website, under the girls polo link. If your daughter plays a different FALL sport, she will switch to water polo when the season begins. Please have her notify the Counseling Office of her change at that time so she will be formally switched to the water polo roster.
There is no off season swim class available for PE credit. Swimmers who don't play water polo will need to enroll in first semester PE freshman and sophomore year. Swim tryouts are in February (second semester). It is strongly recommended that incoming non-polo players join one of the local swim clubs to prepare for swim tryouts in february. Two excellent local clubs are CLASS Aquatics and CSA. Depending on the number of people who try out, cuts may be made following swim team tryouts.
Participation in the summer water polo program DOES NOT guarantee a spot on the season roster.
Our mandatory Parent/Student Meeting will be held shortly after school begins once tryouts have concluded and the teams have been selected. The date and time will be announced on our website. We will collect fees, review rules, sign up parent volunteers and disperse team shirts and merchandise. In addition, each team (Varsity, JV, and Frosh-Soph) will have their own meeting following one of the preseason practices. The date and time of the meeting will be announced on the website.
All WHS athletes must have a physical exam and complete a Medical Release packet to participate in any sport during the school year. Required forms are available from Ellen Hellman in the Athletic Office. These releases must be completed by your doctor and returned to the Athletic Office PRIOR to participation in any water sports. We suggest you handle this before the end of school in June, or in the summer before school starts.
All WHS athletes are also required to pay a Transportation Fee prior to beginning their sport. It is best to pay the fees on Registration Day and they are paid directly to the Student Store on campus. Any questions regarding these fees should be directed to Mr. Passalacqua, Athletic Director or Ellen Hellman in the Athletic Office. These fees are: $103.00/first sport, $59.00/second sport, and $45.00/third sport.
Girls' Water Polo season as well as the Swim season can be cold. Parkas are optional, but suggested. It's a worthwhile investment for our Water Polo and Swim seasons. They can be purchased at Conejo Swimworks in Thousand Oaks. The attached flyer has details. Allow 6-8 weeks for delivery, so plan ahead. If purchased after the season begins they may not arrive in time to be used during the season.
The MAIN fundraiser the Aquatics Program will have this season is the purchase of blue Billboards. They will be displayed around our pool. It's great advertisements for businesses, as well as good wishes from families. The billboards will be displayed from Sept.1, 05 to June 1, 06. The attached flyer has details and more information can be found on our website.
If you have any questions, please contact Charmayne Olswang, VP Boys Polo, at 805-496-0046, Susan McElvaney, President of WHS Aquatics Boosters, at 805-497-3619, or Coach Todd Irmas at 805-497-6711.
We look forward to meeting you at summer sign ups or at the beginning of school on the pool deck.
Sincerely,
WHS Aquatics Boosters & Coaches |
